Maori science gets boost
Tests to see if food collected in mahinga kai is safe to eat, new tools to propagate native trees and a new water management concept for spring-fed catchments are among 32 projects in the latest Te Punaha Hihiko – Vision Matauranga Capability Fund round of $3.9 million.
Science and Innovation Minister Paul Goldsmith says the fund is for people and organisations conducting research that takes in indigenous innovation, environmental sustainability, health and social well-being, and exploring indigenous knowledge.
It aims to not only grow Maori research skills but further develop important links between Maori and research organisations.
The mahinga kai project iwill bring together Environmental Science and Research staff and Ngai Tahu communities throughout the South Island.
The indigenous podocarp propagation project is a partnership between Ngati Whare and Scion, the crown's forest science agencu.
GNS Science will work with Ngati Rangiwewehi on its concept of identifying ‘kaitiaki’ flow regimes for Awahou Stream near Rotorua.
