Marama Davidson new Greens’ leader
Marama Davidson has been elected co-leader of the Greens, meaning all five parliamentary parties now have leaders or deputy leaders of Maori descent.
Inn taking the contest against Julie Anne Genter, the Ngapuhi and Ngati Porou mother of six confirmed her popularity among the party membership which has seen her bumped up the list before the election.
Co-leader James Shaw says here background makes her ideal to lead the Green’s fight for a fairer, more equal New Zealand.
She will be the only leader of a political party in Parliament who brings to the table a deep and sustained experience of some of the poorest and most disadvantaged communities in our country.
Before entering Parliament Ms Davidson worked as a youth worker in South Auckland and was for ten years an advisor at the Human Rights Commission.
She was also the chief panelist on the Owen Glenn Inquiry into Domestic Violence and Child Abuse.
Mr Shaw says the change won’t affect the governing agreement with Labour.
Ms Davidson campaigned on being able to better uphold Green principles where necessary as a co-leader outside cabinet.
