High wire dance for Okareka
What it means to be human in a chaotic world is the theme of a new work combining acrobatics, contemporary dance and Maori mythology.
Okareka Dance Company’s WIRED premieres at Q Theatre in Auckland from January 24 to 28.
Artistic co-director Taiaroa Royal says the modern world is an artificial system of lines reaching from one person to the next; lines that touch, speak, listen and feel.
“WIRED reflects on notions of belonging and place and the lines, seen and unseen, that bind us together,” he says.
The work features eight performers with a suspended set.
It’s the first major new work by Okareka Dance Company for four years, with the creative team including choreographer Sarah Foster-Sproull, composer Eden Mulholland, set designer John Verryt, lighting designer Vanda Karolczak, costumes by Tanya Carlson and dramaturge Andrew Foster.
