Roche green light for local board run
Former Green MP Denise Roche could be heading back to local government.
She has been picked by City Vision as its candidate for a by-election in the Waitemata local board of the Auckland Council.
Having recently doorknocked Auckland Central during the general election, she has a head start on other candidates.
She’d like to see a good turn-out of Maori.
"What we find is that it’s a really low turnout anyway and given it’s a by-election we’re concerned it will be even lower, and also at the time of year, the end of January early February, but Maori are very underrepresented in local government," Ms Roche says.
People in the area are concerned about the built environment, the state of the harbour and beaches, transport, the persistent high levels of homelessness and housing affordability.
