Maori offered mastery of indigenous business
Six universities have teamed up to deliver a degree programme that responds to the needs of the growing Maori economy.
The Master of Maori and Indigenous Business was designed in consultation with business and iwi.
It will be available through the business schools at Auckland, AUT, Massey, Waikato, Victoria and Otago universities, and will be delivered online after an initial two-day wananga.
Associate Professor Manuka Henare of the University of Auckland says that will allow participation by students who may be running a business or managing whanau, hapu or iwi organisations.
The format allows for regional differences in the Maori economy.
It also takes into account the unique properties of Maori business.
"Of all the indigenous tribal systems, we are probably one of the most export-oriented and we excel in those areas. We come back to having a study programme that keeps our owners of our tribal assets and whanau assets and businesses," keeps them on their toes," associate professor Henare says.
