Reo effort in Brisbane captures prize
A Brisbane-based kapa haka has won the first Te Māngai Pāho video challenge aimed at encouraging support for te reo Māori through social media.
Member Te Waikamihi Ormsby says Te Hau Tawhiti was put together a couple of years ago to compete in a kapa haka super 12 competition, and members decided to carry on looking for other ways to learn and use their reo.
She’s thrilled its competition video generated more than two million interactions on social media.
"The majority of the attention we receive is from back home which is so important for us to know that our content was out there and so people back home know we're still doing what we're doing over here, we're not just working and getting by," she says.
Te Hau Tawhiti might use the $10,000 prize for kākahu for the group’s future performances.
