A Gisborne social worker says Oranga Tamariki is failing to tell grandparents and foster parents looking after children how they can cope with the lock-down.
Tuta Ngarimu from Nati4Life Trust says he is besieged by calls, such as from grandparents who say they have 8 moko living with them and they don’t know how they can cope with four weeks of isolation.
He says the ministry isn’t answering the phone and it hasn’t sent out advice on some of the tough calls caregivers need to make to keep themselves and the children safe.
"The mokos ae not allowed to go with people. They have to stay together all the time. They have to get permission to go to different support groups and who can come around and see them – the visitation of their parents, the visitation of whānau support, all the decisions that need to be made," Mr Ngarimu says.
