Report highlights muddle health system
A Waikato Māori health leader hopes a new report on the heath system will lead to a reallocation of resources.
The review of the health and disability sector led by Heather Simpson, former prime minister Helen Clark's chief of staff, said was muddled and too complicated for those using it.
There was also a lack of collaboration and leadership.
Lady Tureiti Moxon from Te Kōhao Health says that squares with her experience, especially where it leads to inequities for Māori.
She says it's fair to ask if the money is going to the right places.
"Most of the money is actually going into the hospitals. It’s like this deep dark hole because up here at the Waikato DHB, they’re $90 million dollars now in debt and climbing, so what is that saying about what we can actually do for our people when the major source of diagnostics and support is in such a bad way," Lady Moxon says.
