Role of iwi in water body questioned
Angela Dalton says council-owned body Watercare has developed strong relationships with mana whenua, but the new entity has room for just six mana whenua representatives for Auckland and Northland.
She says the plan to hand over council water assets to a centralised body could undermine years of work.
“We have a 10-year plan of investment into water infrastructure and we consulted on that with our community, with iwi. How can we be convinced or be safe in the knowledge it will be implemented? So there is still a lot of talking to do about what this entity looks like and how it operates,” Councillor Dalton says.
