Te Matawai looks ahead
Māori language body Te Matawai gathers in Rotorua today to assess progress and set the strategic direction for the next three years.
Chief executive Poia Rewi says it has done a stocktake of the state of the language and commissioned research into language acquisition.
He says its strength lies in the way it interacts with its regional iwi clusters and national stakeholder groups.
"We have kāhui ā iwi up there, kāhui taone, so the people are now playing the pivotal role of making assessments and decisions about where investments for language revitalisation should sit rather than it being driven out of the office," Professor Rewi says.
