Time to swap pork for pūhā
It's World Vegetarian Day and the NZ Vegetarian Society is calling on people to swap pork for pūhā.
Spokesperson Phillip McKibben says people are embracing plant-based diets, with 15 percent of Kiwis aged 18 and over eating veges exclusively – a 50 percent increase on 2019.
He says Māori are hopping on the trend because of their concerns for animal welfare, the environment and their health, with many diseases that affect Māori stemming from meat-heavy diets.
"We know that processed meats for example are carginogenic, according to the World Health Organisation, so it is related to cancer, but there are a lot of things you get from eating meat that you don't get from a plant-based diet, such as cholesterol for example," Mr McKibben says.
