Kōhanga pay a matter of mana
Primary and early childhood union NZEI Te Riu Roa is calling for the mana of kōhanga reo kaimahi to be upheld by ensuring all kaimahi are paid fairly.
Its matua takawaenga, Laures Park, says many kōhanga reo kaimahi are paid less than the minimum wage despite bringing incredible skills and experience to an important kaupapa for tamariki Māori.
She says they have comparable qualifications to other teachers and kaiako in the sector as well as distinct additional skills, drawing on knowledge of Te Ao Māori and fluency in Te Reo Māori.
The 2019 and 2020 Budgets boosted funding for Kōhanga Reo, but to date there has been no visible increase in kaimahi pay.
The Te Ake Rautangi campaign for the increased wage launched at the union’s annual Te Kāhui Whetū national hui at the weekend references the ake ake tree, symbolising the collective strength of kaimahi.
