A man who oversaw Māori trade training schemes in the past says there’s no need to revive a big government agency to run them.
Former Māori Affairs deputy secretary Neville Baker has welcomed the $1.6 billion trades and apprenticeships training package in Budget 2020, including $50 million for a Māori apprenticeships fund.
He says the relationship with iwi, marae and Māori community organisations will be critical.
"There’s a very important part to play here for the people on the ground, and it's not so much that you need to run it through the policy agencies and the entities out of Wellington. There's a form of devolution that's got to occur here so that you actually trust people on the ground to identify, plan and mobilise the training for our people," Mr Baker says.
He also wants to see the wānanga brought into the training programme.
