Te Pāti Māori has appointed Penny Poutu as Vice President Wāhine and Willie Te Aho as Vice President Tāne as the party sharpens its focus ahead of the 2026 general election.

Party president John Tamihere says the appointments come at a critical time for the movement, with both leaders bringing mana, courage and a strong commitment to the kaupapa.

Poutu says she is stepping into the role at a time when Te Pāti Māori must stand firm, despite what she describes as turbulent times for the party.

She says the party’s goal is clear: to win all seven Māori seats and ensure the next government cannot be formed without an independent Māori voice at the table.

Incoming Vice President Tāne Willie Te Aho says his focus will be on mana motuhake, strong advocacy for Māori and building political power for a future determined by Māori.

The party has also acknowledged outgoing Vice President Wāhine Fallyn Flavell for her service and leadership, with Tamihere paying tribute to her strength, mahi and commitment to the kaupapa.

Te Pāti Māori says its election focus is to remove the coalition Government, win the Māori electorates and strengthen Māori political influence after voters go to the polls on 7 November 2026.
