New Zealand swimmer Erika Fairweather has claimed the country’s first medal of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, winning silver in the women’s 400 metres freestyle on the opening night of competition in Glasgow.
The 22-year-old produced a composed performance to finish second in 4 minutes 2.65 seconds, earning the first Commonwealth Games medal of her career. Australia’s Lani Pallister took gold in a time of 3:59.56, while Australia’s Jenna Forrester claimed bronze.
Fairweather’s silver also marked an encouraging start to the New Zealand swimming campaign, with teammates Caitlin Deans finishing sixth and Eve Thomas placing eighth in the same final.
The medal continues an impressive run of international success for the Dunedin-born swimmer, who has established herself among the world’s leading middle and long-distance freestyle athletes. After becoming a world champion and national record holder, Fairweather has now added a Commonwealth Games podium finish to her growing list of achievements.
New Zealand’s medal tally grew later in the session when Lewis Clareburt secured silver in the men’s 200m individual medley, setting a new New Zealand record in the process. His performance came behind Scotland’s Duncan Scott, who claimed gold in front of a home crowd with a Commonwealth Games record swim.
Swimming New Zealand described the opening day as a flying start for the Kiwi team, with two silver medals providing early momentum as competition continues across the six-day swimming programme.
Fairweather will return to the pool later in the Games with further opportunities in her favoured freestyle events, where New Zealand will be hoping she can add to the country’s medal haul.
