The Blues have secured one of their rising stars for the future, announcing dynamic halfback Taufa Funaki has re-signed with the club through to the end of the 2028 DHL Super Rugby Pacific season.
The East Auckland product and Sacred Heart College graduate has become an increasingly influential figure since making his Blues debut in 2022, developing into one of the team’s most consistent performers.
After progressing through Auckland’s representative pathway and earning selection for the New Zealand Under-20 side, Funaki has built a reputation for his sharp service, speed around the breakdown and attacking instincts.
His breakthrough came during the Blues’ 2024 championship-winning campaign, where he scored five tries in 13 appearances, playing a key role in helping the franchise claim the Super Rugby Pacific title.
Since his debut, the 25-year-old has gone on to make 42 appearances in the blue jersey, cementing his place as an important member of the squad.
Funaki says remaining with his hometown franchise is a privilege, describing the opportunity to continue representing Auckland as the fulfilment of a childhood dream. He also acknowledged the strong support of Blues fans, saying playing at Eden Park remains one of the highlights of his career and expressing confidence in what the club can achieve over the coming seasons.
Blues General Manager of Rugby Murray Williams says retaining Funaki is a significant step in the club’s long-term plans.
Williams says the halfback has grown into a respected leader within the squad and believes there is still considerable room for his game to develop. He says keeping high-quality local talent in Auckland remains a key part of the club’s strategy, with Funaki expected to play a major role in the Blues’ future success.
The re-signing provides further stability for the Blues as they continue building a squad capable of challenging for more Super Rugby Pacific titles over the next several seasons.
