Independent Māori takes GP skills home
The former chief medical officer at Te Aka Whai Ora says he has no regrets about not shifting to Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand.
Rawiri McKree Jansen says staff at the Maori health authority were offered transfers to mainstream organisations.
“I declined that. I said I really came because of the kaupapa, an independent Maori health authority. If they disestablished that, from my point of view that opportunity’s closed and so I resigned and in a happy way I’m back in primary care in Auckland being a GP every day and I love it. There’s lots of joy in that for me,” he says.
Dr Jansen is now with a practice in Onehunga.
