An installation by Ngāti Tuwharetoa artist and Walters Prize winner Shannon Te Ao has been chosen for the 15th Gwangju Biennale in South Korea.
Ia rā, ia rā (rere runga, rere raro) – Everyday (I fly high, I fly low) is inspired by the flight of the tīwakawaka or fantai, which is linked to Māori narratives associated with birth, death and the veil between the two.
The project is curated by Karl Chitham and will show in the Gwangju Biennale Pavilion from September 7 to December 1 through a partnership between Pakuranga’s Te Tuhi gallery, the Dowse Art Museum in Lower Hutt and the Office for Contemporary Art Aotearoa, a new venture by Auckland Art Fair co-director Stephanie Post.
