Kura kaupapa included in phonics test regime
Get your tamariki ready for phonics tests.
Education Minister Erica Stanford says from next year new entrants will be tested on their reading progress at 20 and 40 weeks of schooling.
For years three the eight, there will be twice-yearly progression monitoring for reading, writing and maths.
She says tests have also been developed for children in Maori medium and bilingual settings.
“We wanted to make sure we’ve got that equity across the system, that we’re able to assess progress through both English medium and Maori medium and kura kaupapa so we can raise achievement. My guiding north star is to close that equity gap and assessment is only one of the tools but it is a crucial tool to make sure all of the other things we are doing is working and we are on track to progress to 80 percent of kids on curriculum,” Minister Stanford says.
She says assessment will give parents certainty about their childrens’ learning.
