Prime Minister Christoper Luxon says additional pūtea is on the way for flood ravaged Wairoa.
It’s estimated it will cost more than $40 million to clean up last week’s damage, caused when the Wairoa River mouth was obstructed durng heavy rain.
Mr Luxon says Emergency Management Minister Mark Mitchell presented a paper to Cabinet yesterday and will make an announcement later this week.
Government has already contributed $300,000 to mayoral relief funds in Hastings, Wairoa and Tai Rāwhiti.
“We stand ready to go with any more assistance financially that’s needed. We are open to investing more. We’ve got a billion dollars in this Budget going into the regions. We’ve got $7.5 billion in multipe capial allowances as well and we’re very open to supporting Wairoa in particular,” Mr Luxon says.
The Governent also needed to review the actions of the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, which is responsible for managing the river bar.
A state of emergency remains in place.
