A Kirikiriroa charity working with kaumatua says many are still doing it tough despite the increase in national superannuation in April.
Rauawaawa chief executive Rangimahora Reddy says if people own their home, the benefit of $27,000 a year for a single person and $40,000 for a couple may just be enough – but they are in severe trouble if they rent.
The level of support from whanau can be critical.
“Within our whanau there’s a whole lot of different dynamics that come into play – justice issues, drugs, putea – there’s a whole heap of things that impact on younger whanau members that make them incapable and unable to look after our older people well,” Ms Reddy says.
