The host of a new series on mōteatea says it will make the language and stories of the traditional song poems more accessible.
He Reo Tawhito is produced by SOUNZ Centre for NZ Music as an audio and visual podcast on both YouTube and Spotify.
Crystal Edwards says she was able to draw on experts like Te Taura Whiri i te Reo chief executive Ngahiwi Apanui-Barr, Tamai Waaka from Matatini champions Te Whānau a Apanui, Teina Moetara from Rongowhakaata and Turuhira Hare from Tūhoe.
“This taonga that these stalwarts within te ao Māori ōr te ao moteatea have gifted us is now accessible for all of New Zealand folk out there to dive in and possibly understand what makes us as Maori unique and moteatea or waiata koaua or waiata tawhito is something that definitely displays that about Māoritanga,” she says.
