Associate Education Minister David Seymour has introduced his Education and Training Amendment Bill, which will bring back charter schools, make it easier to open early childhood centres and set the way schools report attendance.
He says the changes will make the New Zealand education system more flexible and responsive to family and student needs.
The Bill sets out how charter schools will be set up and operate, including the application and approval process, monitoring, property, staff, and the establishment of the Charter School Authorisation Board.
Now that the Bill is introduced, applications for new and converting schools will open in July.
Schools will be required to give the ministry daily attendance from term one next year, and from selected kaupapa Māori education providers by mid-2025.
