A Waikato roopu which works with kuia and kaumatua is launching its new resources at Parliament today.
Rauawaawa Kaumātua Charitable Trust worked with the University of Waikato and Te Rūnanga o Kirikiriroa to develop the housing, social enterprise and hauora toolkits.
Chief executive Rangimahora Reddy says the housing toolkit describes the way Te Rūnaka o Awarua built six kaumatua flats on Te Rau Aroha Marae in Bluff.
“Housing is a kaupapa that is really important to our kaumatua. We are always please to partner with the runanga. They are leaders in that kaumatua housing space but we need more. We’ve got a growing ageing population. We don’t have enough suitable housing for our kaumatua. We don’t have enough social housing that’s affordable for our kaumatu. So there’s some gaps, there’s some mahi to be done,” she says.
