Māori astronomer Rangi Mātāmua says preparations are going well for the national Matariki broadcast out of Wānaka at the end of the month.
Ngāi Tahu is hosting this year’s public holiday opening.
The iwi chose Wānaka for cultural and practical reasons.
“It was a place where they would come together and look at the sky and look at the signs of the season, share their rich and deep and meaningful korero. It was their request to come here and we’ve been to the place that it’s going to be celebrated and it was a beautiful, beautiful morning sky yesterday here and hopefully we get the same, same view,” Professor Mātāmua says.
