A leading member of the Māori housing advocacy group Te Matapihi wants to see signs in today’s Budget that Associate Housing Minister Tama Pōtaka has stood up for Māori-led housing initiatives.
Rau Hoskins says that before entering parliament, Mr Potaka was a major force behind Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki’s housing developments around Auckland.
“I would really hope that his convictions prevail and that he’s been able to at least maintain the investment that’s been put into the Māori housing sector in the last six years. But we’ll see. We’ll see what are the pressures that he’s come under from other partners in government,” he says.
Minister Pōtaka has told Waatea News the main priority in the Budget is tax cuts.
