Housing advocacy group Te Matapihi says there’s more to Māori housing than social housing.
General manager Ali Hamlin Paenga says the ropu has been closely watching changes in state housing agency Kainga Ora, but it was blindsided by last week’s decision to scrap the $10,000 first home grant.
It was also looking at the hurdles put in the way of people taking advantage of the progressive home ownership scheme introduced by the previous government.
“Our housing sector needs to come together and we need to look at what it is we can do to look at other affordable options and set our own direction and look at the potential of our people in terms of the resource we have to ensure the dreams of those who want home ownership come true,”
Ms Hamlin Paenga says
A lack of direction from government is affecting the whole sector, and it needs to increase support to Maori community housing providers.
