Teachers stand up for te tiriti
The secondary school teachers’ union says the return of charter schools will see commitments to Te Tiriti and Māori educational equality watered down… as the Government channels taxpayer money into private schools.
PPTA-Te Wehengarua president Chris Abercrombie says while some Maori groups are keen to establish or reestablish charter schools, the vast majority of akonga Maori students attend public schools.
He says the PPTA stands by its commitment to the Treaty and its founding role in Aotearoa-New Zealand.
“One of our key constitutional objectives is to advance and affirm Te Tiriti o Waitangi – as part of our standards as teachers. So we’re really concerned about some of the rhetoric, some the discussion, going about. So we want to talk to our members, see what we can do to further advance and affirm Te Tiriti o Waitangi in our schools,” Mr Abercrombie says.
The union will hold paid meetings for more than 21,000 secondary and area school teachers this month to discuss sector changes and Government rhetoric around watering down treaty principles.
