Cell phone ban popular says Education Minister
Education Minister Erica Stanford says schools which have already banned cell phones are seeing the benefits.
From the start of term two this week cell phones are banned from all classrooms and playgrounds in line with National’s election promise campaign policy.
Some schools tried it out in the first term.
“Principals have been writing to me every day telling me how wonderful it is to hear noise in the playground. Librarians are telling me kids are taking books out more often. Students themselves are telling us they don’t have the anxiety of having to check their phones every five minutes for messages coming in. This is overwhelmingly popular,” Ms Stanford says.

Erica Stanford says schools will have flexibility in how they apply the regulations, and students who require their phones for health, learning support or special circumstances are exempt.
