Knives out at Oranga Tamariki
The Ministry for Children Oranga Tamariki is set to more than 400 jobs as the Government hunts for cash for its tax cuts.
Chief executive Chappie Te Kani framed the cuts as the next step in a transformation project that started in 2021.
Documents leaked to NZME show the agency is considering merging care and protection, youth justice, and caregiver recruitment in some areas.
The executive line-up is to be trimmed, and it’s seeking to refocus its Māori, partnerships, and communities plans on a national strategy – with the group getting a new title of ‘enabling communities and investment’.
About 1900 of the organisation’s 5100 positions could be affected in some way, including all positions in the national office below the chief executive, and all roles in regional offices above site manager, youth justice manager, and residence manager.
