Tatou social supermarket opens in Mangere
The head of Mangere Budgeting Services says a new social supermarket means whānau will be able to access what they need with more choice and dignity than the traditional foodbank.
Trust chief executive Lara Dolan says it’s a partnership with Foodstuffs North Island and a range of major suppliers, and it will be serviced by Pak’n’Save Mangere.
Applicants will be given points by the trust according to circumstances and family size, which they can then go next door to spend in the Tatou store.
“Our staff came up with the name, our staff are predominantly Pasifika and Māori, and Tatou means everyone or for everyone in many Pacific languages and also has a similar meaning in te reo,” Ms Dolan says.
Demand for the service’s budgeting advice and help has gone up 17 percent in the past year.
