Landscape changing for Taranaki deals
A Taranaki leader says there are concerns within iwi about whether settlements on Parihaka and Taranaki Maunga will survive the change of Governemnt unscathed.
Ruakere Hond says the maunga settlement recognises Taranaki Maunga as a legal personality, while the Parihaka deal aims to build an ongoing relationship in a spirit of reconciliation.
“In while we’re a little bit nervous, at the same time anticipating that there will be a relationship and looking forward to what we are able to work througth. There’s a lot of development that needs to take place with the community so we are still very much focused on that,” he says.
Dr Hond says because the Parihaka deal is is outside the normal treaty settlement process, Parihake papakainga trustees will be dealing with Maori Development Minister Tama Potaka rather than Teary Minister Paul Goldsmith.
