Court rules media advocacy benefits community

The Court of Appeal has upheld a challenge by the Better Public Media Trust against the Charities Registration Board’s refusal to register it as a charity.
It says the High Court was wrong in supporting the board’s assessment that the work of the trust was not beneficial to the community.
The trust’s primary purpose is to advocate for the provision of public media, and it has run campaigns in support of continued funding for Radio New Zealand and TVNZ.
The court says looking at other cases involving advocacy organisations like Greenpeace and the Crown Forestry Rental Trust, it fits the criteria.
