MP mokopuna puts fire in belly of old warrior

The grandfather of new Māori Party MP Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke says he’ll keep speaking out on issues that get him riled up,
Timi Maipi has a history of activism stretching back to his membership of Nga Tamatoa in the 1970s, and extends to defacing colonial statues and challenging examples of racism in Waikato.
He says it’s great to see a younger generation stepping up, but there is plenty of room for pakeke protesters.
“It’s put a little bit of flame under my belly to say ‘yes, let’s do it,’ because Hana’s going to get assurance from us we still support the kaupapa and we can’t., just because of our age and experience, we’d like to think if she needs us we’re there to help,” Mr Maipi says
He didn’t expect his mokopuna would have beaten long-serving Hauraki Waikato MP Nanaia Mahuta, so he’s pleased so many young people turned out to vote for her.
