Whānau Ora’s approach to development has been in the spotlight at a major hui in Amsterdam.
North Island Whānau Ora Commissioning Agency chief operations officer Awerangi Durie was a speaker at the Global Centre for Social Enterprise conference which looked at turning collective action into sustainable change.
She says Māori understand that social enterprise is business with the purpose of contributing to the wellbeing and strength of communities.
“We’re able to talk about creating sustainable outcomes for whanau on the ground, a ground up approach. We’re able to work with whanau in a way where you make sustainable change over time, from crisis to resilience to leadership. when you have those in place you can create a more significant magic and transformation happens, and we are able to highlight for the first time with 800 families reducing child poverty,” Ms Durie says.
She says Whānau Ora now has the data on how it has been able to reduce child poverty within 800 families.
