Education inequity on uLearn agenda

Education experts are meeting in Manukau this week on ways to tackle education inequity.
uLearn23 will look at issues like ending streaming, mental health and wellbeing initiatives, new curricula, AI, cultural taxation, reclaiming matauranga Maori and demystifying essay writing.
Hana O’Regan, the chief executive of conference organiser Tātai Aho Rau Core Education, says Māori have faced disproportionate barriers to higher education, with the system all too often streaming them into a low-skill workforce.
“It’s not just money, it’s also an appreciation and an awareness of the inequity that exists. And then equitable support, a support to be able to have some agency in the solutions that are going to change that. So that we get to control and determine the right pathways for our people and for our communities ourselves,” she says
