Wainuiārua signs historic settlement

A cluster of central North Island hapu under Te Korowai o Wainuiārua is set for a new start after Saturday’s signing in Raetihi of a deed to settle historic treaty claims.
Te Korowai, which includes Tamahaki, Tamakana, and Uenuku, will receive $21.7 million in financial and commercial redress, $6.8 million in cultural funding, the return of 19 sites of cultural significance, 12 commercial properties, support to establish a predator-proofed ecosanctuary at Pōkākā, and a seat on the Tongariro-Taupō Conservation Board.
Chair Aiden Gilbert says the mahi of their tupuna is now bearing fruit.
“Therein is the challenge for us, to set the waka straight, to take the opportunities that are left now in our country as a whole. I’m reminded too that there have been other settlements before that have done well. These will obviously used as a guide,” Mr Gilbert says.
