Greens take aim at housing shortfall

The Green Party has promised to clear the state house waiting list and boost the number of whare built by Māori and community providers.
Launching the policy at the party’s conference in Auckland yesterday, co-leader Marama Davidson said that means building another 35,000 state homes.
The latest figures from Kainga Ora show just over 24,000 people are on its waiting list.
“We’re also supporting more community housing, Māori-led housing – there’s an ability for an extra seven and a half to 10,000 more community-led and Māori-led homes to be built. So together that will go a long way to reducing the waiting list in five years,” she says.
The Green Party manifesto also calls for a standalone Climate Change Ministry with a Te Tiriti-based approach to reaching a zero carbon Aotearoa.
