Budget Māori spend contested


Māori Development Minister Willie Jackson says the Māori Party needs to learn how to count.
The party has made procurement a major plank of its campaign strategy with claims a tiny fraction of government spending actually goes to Maori.
Mr Jackson says of the almost $5 billion of new spending in the Budget, $895 million or about 17 percent goes to Maori initiatives.
“They are talking about an overall Budget and they are making out that Maori providers represent all of Maoridom. Maori providers are between 5 and 10 percent in this country and we get 17 percent of the funding for those Maori providers. That’s not too bad because the rest of Maoridom are able to access funding through the general and universal fund
