Incinerator toxic solution to waste problem
A Māori-focused zero waste group says a Kaipara District Council feasibility study for a waste-to-energy incinerator goes against Māori-values of protecting the environment and people.
Jacqui Forbes of Para Kore says if the incinerator goes ahead, it could lead to decades of toxic gases and particulates being released into the air, increased global warming, and New Zealanders thinking recycling is no longer necessary.
Overseas, countries like Japan have forced waste incinerator businesses to invest billions of dollars to ensure highly toxic particulates – generally from burning plastics – are kept to a minimum. Other countries have gone for cheaper more polluting options – which make good economic, but bad environmental sense.
She says the Government should impose a moratoriums on all waste-incinerator proposals until better scientific and health information is available.
“It’s really scary to think that local government are getting people at their door, saying ‘hey look here’s a great solution’ – and its our local councillors that are making these decisions that could lock communities into what we think is a disastrous pathway,” Ms Forbes says.
She says waste-incinerators are about profit and reducing landfill volumes – but massive increases in recycling are better for the planet and people.
