$200million for Māori Housing in Wellbeing Budget 2023
Māori have been allocated a total of $825 million in this year’s Wellbeing Budget announced by Finance Minister Grant Roberson today.
Included in this is a range of housing solutions that will be delivered by Māori for Māori.
$200 million is being directed into Whai Kāinga Whai Oranga. This allows Iwi, Hāpu and Māori organisations develop and supply long term housing to whānau around the motu.
This builds on the 1018 whare already approved, currently under construction and fully completed.
This will come as welcome news to organisations who are already delivering both semi and permanent whare to whānau in the hau-kainga and urban areas.
Included in this pūtea is the ability to build capacity of tradespeople and strengthen building capabilities. 1,615 infrastructure sites are currently in development.
The Government is continuing to repair existing whare with 415 already completed. This is an initiative close to the hearts of all the Māori Labour caucus as it targets Kaumatua-kuia and whānau whare.
