Voice of Māori to remain at Hamilton Council
Hamilton City Council has voted to continue with a streamlined version of its voice of Māori model.
Maangai Māori with speaking and voting rights were yesterday appointed to its community and natural environment, infrastructure and transport, and strategic growth and district plan committees.
The appointees were nominated by key Māori partners and stakeholders based on skill, knowledge and experience.
An amendment by two councillors to appoint just two maangai Māori, with no voting rights, was voted down.
Mayor Paula Southgate says the maangai Māori have worked hard to represent the views of many people in the wider community.
Alongside the council’s two new Māori ward councillors, these additional voices provide welcome views and experiences.
“Council has recognised the need and desire to work closely with Māori, and give effect to Te Tiriti across all levels of our work.”
