Strong entries for portrait award
Forty four works have been shortlisted for the second Kiingi Tuheitia Portraiture Award, which gives emerging Māori artists a chance to create portraits of their tūpuna.
The award is a partnership between the Office of the Kiingitanga and the New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te Pūkenga Whakaata.
Gallery director Jaenine Parkinson says the quality of the 96 entries was extremely high, with everyone paying great respect to their tūpuna as they depicted them in the various mediums including painting, photography, sculpture, whakairo, rāranga, video and AI technology.
The winners of the $20,000 first prize and the $2500 runner up and people’s choice awards will be announced on May 24 when the finalists will go on show at the gallery on Wellington’s waterfront until August,.
