Ngai Tai ready to replace flood hit Mangere housing
Ngai Tai ki Tamaki chair James Brown says his iwi has the answer for Mangere families whose homes went under water in the Anniversary Weekend floods.
He says he’s told Kainga Ora and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development it’s unacceptable to reoccupy the houses on the flood plain.
Ngai Tai has done the site work for large developments near Middlemore Hospital and is ready to start building above the ground.
“The two most-available sites for Kainga Ora to reconcile this flood plain and infrastructure issue is at Hospital Rd and Mangere Rd. At the moment we’re coming out of the ground. Our roads are just about finished. We’ve just got to complete a stormwater upgrade. Kainga Ora knows we are ready to build above the ground” Mr Brown says.
Ngai Tai ki Tamaki has replaced former chief executive Tama Potika, who gives his maiden speech today as the new MP for Hamilton West, with one of its own, Jada McPhee, who has executive experience at Tamaki Redevelopment.
