Forest industry credibility slashed

An East Coast iwi manager says forestry companies will have a hard time convincing people in the region they are serious about reducing the damage caused by their industry.
George Reedy from Ngati Porou Hauora says there is considerable pent up animosity over the slash which washes off the land every time there is flooding.
“The industry talks about since 2018 they have tidied up their practices. The difficulty is that isn’t translating into what we’re seeing on the beaches and in our rivers. It’s a bit of an uphill battle for them to try to claim moral ground there,” he says.
George Reedy says the effects of slash is one of the reason parts of the East Coast are still cut off more than a week after the latest cyclone.
Homes in Tokomaru Bay were yesterday evacuated because of fears a debris dam in the xx river upstream of the township could burst.
Met Service warned there are higher odds of flooding for parts of Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne today because of rain runoff, onshore winds, growing wave heights and higher tides.
Converging winds could also bring heavy rain to Auckland and Coromandel this afternoon and evening.
