Massey kaiarahi putting te tiriti into action
Massey University is training staff to look for ways to put Te Tiriti o Waitangi into action.
Professor Meihana Durie, its deputy vice chancellor Maori, says there has been a loit of talk over the years about treaty principles, but it now wanted to look at the provisions of the treaty and what changes to practices and procedures will give it meaningful expression.
The programme involves about 45 kaiarahi tiriti across the faculties and departments, led by Associate Professor Veronica Tawhai.
“Veronica spent a large amount of time with people like Professor Margaret Mutu, the late Dr Moana Jackson and many others who I think were very, very instrumental in reaffirming and confirming the place to Te Tiriti o Waitangi in Aotearoa,” he says.
Professor Durie says the kaiarahi programme aims to align the univeristy with Maori aspirations in areas like recruitmmrnt of staff and students, the provision of services to Maori, scholarship systems, the transition into careers and making universities a welcoming place for Maori and Maori staff.
