Marae helping match up flood aid

Auckland mayor Wayne Brown expects the rebuild of Auckland after this week’s floods could take upto a year.
Mr Brown has been visiting community agencies and marae involved in the response, including Nga Whare Waatea in Mangere.
He’s impressed with the way Maori were able to swing into action.
“One of the things I discovered is there is a lot of generous people and there’s a lot of people that need things but they’re not well connected so what we don’t want is a whole lot of people delivering generosity to places which can’t accept generosity so I’m impressed with what is happening here (at Nga Whare Waatea). In terms of what I’m doing particulalry for Maori, I’m the mayor for everybody and my kaupapa is that I’m totally comfortable amongst Maoridom, I recognise they’re an important part of the thing and they’re not left out, they’re absolutely ionvolved,” Mayor Brown says.
Mayor Brown says communications could have been done bhtter, including his own, and he will review everything, including the performance of his office and of emergency management.
