Education record shows Hipkins backing Māori
Labour deputy leader Kelvin Davis expects incoming Prime Minsiter Chris Hipkins to continue the Labour Government’s records of delivering for Māori.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern tendered her resignation to Governor General Dame Cindy Kiro this morning, and Mr Hipkins and his deputy Carmel Sepuloni have been sworn in.
Mr Davis says and Mr Hipkins’ associate minister in the education portfolio he has seen him working up close.
“I would say to him ‘these are the things I want to do, I want to do this, I want to do that for Maoridom.’ He would sit there pretty impassive, he’d pause for maybe a send and then and go ‘yep, I’m into that, it’s a good idea,’ he would just back our Māori education things so I am confident Chris is going to be doing amazing things for Maoridom,” he says.
Mr Davis says Chris Hipkins asked him to stay on as party deputy leader.
