South Auckland garages breeding ground for talent

Minister for Children Kelvin Davis says National leader Chris Luxon’s claim that South Auckland kids as sitting in garages waiting to join gangs shows how out of touch he is with ordinary New Zealanders.
There has been widespread outrage at Mr Luxon’s explanation for youth crime that “if you’re sitting in a garage in South Auckland with your two brothers and you’re thinking about life and where you’re going, consciously or unconsciously, the gang life looks pretty attractive.”
Mr Davis says what he saw in three years teaching in Mangere was very different.
“Beautiful kids, what a wonderful melting pot of representation of Aotearoa, in fact, one of the kids in the first class I ever taught became a principal herself and taught up north and carried on influencing and leading kids and she is just one of many doing wonderful things who have come out of South Auckland,” he says.
