Youth digital shift challenge for Māori media

The editor of this year’s Aotearoa New Zealand Media Ownership report says social media provides a major challenge for all media organisations, including Māori.
Auckland University of Technology media studies professor Wayne Hope says Maori media face a huge challenge to retain youth audiences.
“Young audiences, young users are migrating more into the digital domain than what we call the traditional mass-media domain. Maori television and other areas of the Maori media ecology have to take account of that and plan for it, and I know that is indeed the case,” he says.
Professor Hope says the education system needs to teach young people how to recognise the misinformation and disinformation they are increasingly exposed to.
Other developments he sees as critical are the proposed TVNZ-Radio New Zealand merger and efforts to make Meta/Facebook and Google pay for news content.
